2008 Saint Reol Elegance Grand Cru d’Ambonnay Brut

9.5/10 stars

d'Ambonnay is a very well-known Grand Cru village in champagne, there are many well-known champagne houses from d’Ambonnay, e.g. Krug, Duval Leroy, Mumm, Piper Heidsieck, Pol Roger, Roederer … etc. Saint-Reol is a cooperative by polling 58 champagne producers with excellent champagne making skills to make their champagnes, thus quality is assured. This is a blend of 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay, along with 19% wines without going through malolactic fermentation. The content was bottled in 2009, dosage of 8g/L. Decanter awarded this wine 97/100 in 2021 and won a platinum medal. Bouquet was obvious fruitiness and strong character. A sip and I really enjoyed the minerality which was the signature character of most 2008 champagne, as you can see, I have a bowl of fresh oysters, and this champagne was a perfect match of my oysters, as the mineral in the champagne really brought out the freshness of the oysters. As I continue to sip on the champagne over the evening, I realized another very important aspect: the evolution of the champagne. It started glowing, becoming more intense with the fruits, and simply exploded with the kind of ripeness and richness of fruits, along with great length. Exceptionally enjoyable to drink a champagne with growing confidence, highly recommended!
