Wine With Bok - 9.5/10 Stars

This is the second wine of Chateau La Grangere and is made by 100% Merlot. Vineyards are located along and near the Troplong Mondot with the same exposure as the Château Pavie on the south facing slopes. Surprising bouquet of mineral, almost stainless steel in addition to graphite and carbon, this is my first whiff. I was very impressed with the content, as a sip of it right out of a pop of the cork revealed that there wasn’t any harsh tannins, very rounded and full bodied, very approachable, with great intensity and maturity. d’Ambonnay is a very well-known Grand Cru village in champagne, there are many well-known champagne houses from d’Ambonnay, e.g. Krug, Duval Leroy, Mumm, Piper Heidsieck, Pol Roger, Roederer … etc. Saint-Reol is a cooperative by polling 58 champagne producers with excellent champagne making skills to make their champagnes, thus quality is assured. This is made of 100% Pinot Noir grape varietal. Decanter in 2021 gave a rating of 91/100 with a silver medal award. I popped open and paired it with Hamachi collar, the bouquet instantaneously revealed fruity and fleshy aroma. Body is creamy, along with very fruity character as well, it’s probably a rather straight forward champagne with not much complexity. However, I had a chance to compare it with other non-Grand Cru champagnes, the obvious difference is the softness of the body for Saint-Reol Blanc de Noirs, once you have a sip, you obviously didn’t want to taste the non-Grand Cru ones anymore, as the softness is really appealing, and it stood out clearly amongst the Grand Cru and the non-Grand Cru champagnes.

2021 Arnaud Baillot Bourgogne Chardonnay

Arnaud Baillot has teamed up with his wife Laure who is the grand-daughter of Domaine Hudelot-Noellate in Chambolle Musigy to produce a range of burgundy wines. The Bourgogne white with 100% Chardonnay grapes comes from Cote d’Or. Grapes went through manual harvesting, with traditional fermentation of 15 days in stainless steel tank and age for 12 months in Burgundy oak which comprises of 10% new oak. I normally don’t expect much of the lowest common denominator of Bourgogne wines, but I must confess the quality is stunning; a sip and I realized a stunning quality of acidity, it may not have the lushness nor the feminine character of a premier cru wine, but it definitely has a lot of complexity with multiple layers of sophisticated taste. It’s a very enjoyable wine even though it’s sitting at the bottom most of the burgundy wine chain.
