Without doubt this stands as the last great Margaux before the Mentzelopoulos family acquired the First Growth in 1978. The bouquet is entrancing: ineffable delineation and a spellbinding sense of mineralité that appears undiminished by the passing years. After 20-30 minutes I observed oyster shells and sea cave scents percolating through the veneer of black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins fashioned by the finest chisel in the set: incredibly well balanced with hints of kirsch towards the crystalline finish. This is simply the apotheosis of Château Margaux predating Paul Pontallier’s reign (11/2018)
