I got confused with Clarke and Smith Haut Lafitte, and chose the two wrongly in my blind tasting. I must confess Chateau Clarke punched way above it’s Cru Bourgeois status, performing above my expectation and in fact performed much better than Smith Haut Lafitte. Just bear in mind that Smith Haut Lafitte only become a star after the Cathiard family took over the vineyard in 1990, wines produced prior to 1990 was relatively disappointing. The overperformance of Chateau Clarke proved that Bordeaux’s Cru Bourgeois should not be under-estimated, don’t judge the wines by price, even though it’s merely $180 for a 40 year old wine, it did just as well as Pape Clement, which was very typical of a Graves wine with earthy and wet earth notes. Haut Brion needs no introduction, a sip and one can tell this wine has to be a top wine; extremely balanced, elegance, while the content is dense with a lot of substance and characters in the content, slightly creamy and latte taste, definitely a wine to keep for another 30 more years before reaching it’s peak.
