Allen Meadows Burghound - 94 Points

An exceptionally attractive and impressively complex white flower, spice and crushed herb aromas are trimmed in noticeable wood toast and lead to rich, nicely powerful and gorgeously detailed flavors of equally impressive depth and excellent finishing persistence.(7/2008)

John Gilman - 94 Points

Ramonet’s ’96 Bienvenues is a stunning bottle of wine, with the depth, breed and superb complexity that is so often evident in this wine. However, given that my 1990 and 1992 grand crus from Ramonet are not even remotely ready to drink, I find it instructive that this bottle of the ’96 Bienvenues (tasted in the fall of 2005) is actually showing significant signs of secondary development, which leads me to believe that peroxide is now in play. However, none of the aromatic components of the wine are disappointing yet, as a lovely mélange of lemon oil, peppermint, pear, tangerine, hints of bacon fat, chalky minerality, spring flowers and vanillin oak jumps from the glass. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, complex and showing secondary notes of development as well, with snappy acids supplying a lovely framework for the wine, but this is also (atypically for an nine year-old Ramonet grand cru) wide open and hitting on all cylinders. The finish is long, complex and well-balanced, making this bottle at least a lovely drink for consuming over the next few years- decidedly fast track for a Ramonet grand cru and clearly the result of some peroxide issues at work in the cork. (7/2006)
