Andre Clouet Champagne Vintage 2009 versus Dream Vintage 2005 Grand Cru
The heads on clash between Dream Vintage 2005 Grand Cru against Dream Vintage 2006 on 8-Sep-23 made me stage another clash tonight, fielding the past winner Dream Vintage 2005 Grand Cru versus Vintage 2009 which was made of 100% Pinot Noir. The Dream Vintage 2005 Grand Cru was made of 100% Chardonnay. It may not be a fair comparison, nonetheless, still a worthwhile fight coming from a completely different camp. The outcome was bold and stunning, this time round, the Grand Cru had to give in to the Pinot Noir champagne, and I had to boldly declare the 2009 as the winner of the competition. It was hard to find the winner when I started tasting both champagnes, as both were very similar in characters; soft, elegant and feminine. However, all it took was 45 mins of drinking session for me to realize what has evolved, the 2009 vintage has a lot more impact in taste, more complexity and bolder in terms of style. It’s probably due to the overly hot weather in 2009 that created the more intense and bold style of 2009 vintage. (10/23)

Maison André Clouet spans 9 hectares of parcels, all of which grand cru, located in Bouzy. It has been upholding tradition and regional expertise for more than 200 years. The domain even owns vines gifted by Napoleon, as a thank you for his role as king's scribe. The Chardonnay which makes up this cuvée has been grown on clay and limestone soil before being harvested by hand. The Maison has favoured alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in steel vats. The wine has then aged on its lees for four years. On tasting, it unfurls a fine balance marked by aromatic freshness and a full-bodied palate. Thus, we find notes of white fruit, citrus fruit and minerals on the nose whilst the palate is generous and marked by extremely fine bubbles.
