Wine With Bok - 9.5/10 Stars
This being the second wine of Haut-Bailly, really needs a serious closer look. Knowing 2019 is a great Bordeaux vintage, it’s difficult to produce bad wines. This second wine truly requires some respect, as I think the quality is easily on par, if not better than, some classified growths. Made from 60% merlot and 40% cabernet sauvignon, it actually showed more merlot character than the cabernet sauvignon. Aroma didn’t gel well initially with sour grapes and high acidity, but with proper decanting, the unpleasantness was gone once and forever. Content has very fine tannins, a big wine by Graves standards, and rounded with no rough edges. It really should command some attention, highly recommended! (7/2023)
Wine Enthusiast - 95 points
The second wine of Château Haut-Bailly shows a fine balance between firm tannins and generous, ripe and dense black fruits. With 60% Merlot in the blend, this rich wine has a plump character that means that it will develop relatively quickly into a full-bodied wine. (7/2020)
James Suckling - 94 points
Pine, currant and crushed-stone aromas with some walnuts, berries and orange peel. Full-bodied with round, fine tannins and excellent length. Compact and very fine. Lovely length. Seamless. Try from 2025. (2/2022)
Vinous - 94 points
The 2019 Haut-Bailly II is a very serious second wine. Big, potent tannis give the 2019 much of its somber, brooding personality. Black cherry, graphite, licorice, cloves and new leather infuse the 2019 with tremendous complexity. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2019 for at least a few years. If this tasting is any indication, it is a real powerhouse with quite a bit of cellaring potential. (6/2020)
