Pierre Amiot Aux Charmes, Morey St Denis 2019 versus Olivier Guyot Les Sorbets, Morey St Denis, 2019
A battle between two stronghold labels we carry, both from Morey-Saint-Denis, a very traditional and popular appellation that is sandwiched between the out-of-reach Gevrey Chambertin and the charming Chambolle-Musigny. Even with the same terroir, many winemakers’ content differs vastly in this plot, in any blind tasting, it’ll be really difficult to pin-point a Morey-Saint-Denis wine, although it does have a common character in my opinion; which is very strong earthy bouquet. Surprisingly, Aux Charmes possessed such a character, while Les Sorbets was more flamboyant. Both the bouquet was totally deceiving, as upon a sip, you’d be astonished what the bouquet told you was quite the opposite of the content! I’d describe Aux Charmes as a playful and cheerful wine, while Les Sorbets is the down-to-earth, honest wine. After drinking and spitting both bottles (I finished 2 bottles tonight!), my tendency leaned towards Aux Charmes as my favourite, however, I have to reserve my opinion, as I think Les Sorbets do have it’s own character and style, it possessed a charming character hidden behind the superficial front facing content, in the long run, Les Sorbets will outrun Aux Charmes. I’m pretty sure my opinion will stay in a decades’ time, why don’t you try it out and see if you share my sentiment? (5/2023)
Wine With Bok - 9.25/10 Stars
Aux Charmes is a Premier Cru bordering Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru, products from here may not be top notch Morey St Denis although often times one can get lush and elegant products. Pierre Amiot has been producing wines for many years from this plot, they do have extensive knowledge to produce quality Aux Charmes. Bouquet of rather earthy elements along with red cherries and plums. Content didn’t quite reflect what the bouquet is revealing. Surprisingly thick viscosity with strawberries with slight sourish notes, and raspberry with the fatness of the body. I observed a really addictive fruity character after leaving the content in the glass for 30 mins, I normally control my wine intake to a glass for casual dinner, but tonight the wine is just too alluring that I drank 2/3 of the bottle unconsciously. The wine has a tinge of unresolved sandy tannins, implying that it’s not at the right drinking window yet. I recommend decanting it for 1 hour to really enjoy the fascinating juicy fruits can bring for your pleasure. (7/2022)
