Wine With Bok - 9/10 Stars
I learned that the winemaker of Verget, the famed Jean-Marie kept this plot as a secret as he doesn’t want anyone to know who sells these grapes to him, thus the label Lieu Secret! Upon my first whiff of this wine, I wasn’t impressed, as it seemed the fruit acidity was too elevated to my liking. However, all these changed within minutes; as the wine got exposed to air, it suddenly warped into a totally different style, a style that’s more similar to other Macon wines, the stylish generous and fleshy of a Macon wine. Absolutely a really adorable wine.
Winemaker Notes:
Crafted from vines that share a border with the renowned Chavigne vineyard of Domaine Guffens-Heynen, the precise location of this vineyard remains a well-guarded secret, as Jean-Marie is determined to secure exclusive access to these grapes. The winemaking process involves barrel fermentation, with 25% of new oak barrels, followed by a nine-month aging period before bottling.
In the bountiful vintage of 2022, this Macon reveals its generosity and full-bodied character. The nose greets you with a creamy allure, showcasing plump orchard fruits complemented by subtle hints of vanilla spice. On the palate, this theme persists, offering a delightful array of polished and succulent peaches and pears, elegantly layered with notes of baked vanilla, delicate wisps of wood smoke, and a touch of candied citrus peel. This wine unfolds as a broad, approachable, and undeniably delicious expression, continuing to exemplify the consistent excellence of this cuvée. Its exceptional quality makes it a standout choice for those seeking remarkable value in their wine selections.
