Wine With Bok - 9.5/10 Stars
Year in, year out, we snapped up Verget’s Pouilly-Fuisse Sur la Roche as much as we can get hold of. Why? It’s probably one of the best wines Verget possessed in their stash. Since 2017 I have been writing tasting notes about this plot. In the past, Pouilly-Fuisse does not have any classification or grading for it’s wines, but starting 2020, this appellation finally was recognized by French National Institute of Origin and Quality (INAO) to promote premier cru vineyards within Burgundy’s Maconnais sub-region. We are glad that we have identified such potential since 2018 as my tasting notes in 2018 has stressed that this plot’s quality approaches those 1er Cru level wines from Puligny Montrachet or Chassagne Montrachet. Upon a sip and you will realize the soft and powerful fruits. I have to stress that, it’s not easy to achieve power with softness, like Tai Chi martial arts, the soft strength somehow overwhelmed the power of a powerful punch. This character alone is more than enough to justify this label as an elegant queen of Pouilly-Fuisse, as I have certainly never come across any winemaker with such magical skills to blend two extreme characters into one.

The 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé La Roche is brilliant, offering up aromas of pear, toasted nuts, freshly baked bread and iodine, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive palate underpinned by bright acids and concluding with a long, saline finish. This cuvée is invariably one of Verget's best, and the 2022 is on fine form.
Winemaker Notes:
Nestled among the great Premier Cru vineyards, this particular gem faces the Southeast and unquestionably shines as one of Pouilly-Fuissé's brightest stars. These wines consistently showcase a remarkable mineral character, despite their undeniable richness, making them a compelling choice even when compared to a Meursault three times their price. In the glass, it presents itself with a silvery straw hue, already offering a captivating nose that harmoniously blends the allure of struck match reduction with vibrant notes of zesty citrus and riper, luscious peach fruit. Upon tasting, the palate reveals exquisite equilibrium, marrying the plushness of stone fruit with the invigorating zest of fresh citrus. A textured, slightly pithy quality hints at its genuine aging potential, and beneath it all lies a profound, almost saline vitality that adds complexity and depth. Over time in the bottle, this wine has gained weight and intricacy, leaving an indelible impression of a multi-dimensional La Roche. Anticipate a drinking window spanning well over a decade with ease. This wine is nothing short of brilliant.
