1959 Durfort Margaux Grand Cru Classe
FATHER AND SON
I intentionally served these two different vintages blind, right next to each other. My guests were all spot on, claiming that they’re father and son relationship, as the taste was almost identical! Needless to say the 1959 is more mellow and pleasant, while the 2000 was still young and aggressive, even a 2 hour decant didn’t mellow it down enough. I always enjoy the reaction from aghasted audiences who thought the 59 was way too young. At 58 years old, who would still claim youthfulness?

CLASSIC BEAUTY
1959 was one of the greatest Bordeaux vintages in recent memory, in fact a lot of 59 are still not quite ready to drink. This classic beauty matured earlier than the rest and was fully matured. On a standalone basis, the fragrance emitted from the wine filled up the room. The body was a structured, tightly knitted elegant content, wrapped with some menthol, mint and eucalyptus, it has a rounded body that tasted like a matured Pomerol, really backward and surely a classic beauty.
