1977 Pichon Baron Pauillac
In my mind, 1977 was a disaster vintage due to frost, I have no expectation, until Pichon Baron Pauillac 1977 came along. I normally have the habit to pour the whole bottle of wine into a decanter, whether I want it to sit in the decanter to wake up is another story. For this one, obviously my mind told me to drink it up immediately without getting extra air in the decanter. A whiff and like a morning coffee, woke me up. It had the typical Pichon Baron nose of very refined oak. However, the bouquet quickly blew off. A sip and I was quite disappointed, dry like tea leaves, unexciting. To my biggest surprise, all these negative tastes changed quickly within 30 mins in the decanter, suddenly the wine woke up to be strong and powerful, and the typical chauvinistic style of Baron finally appeared! I swear this was the best 1977 Bordeaux I’ve ever had, better than the Mouton Rothschild!
