1978 Chateau Pavie St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classe "A"
I hopped over to cellar-tracker to see how people rated this wine, I was really disappointed to find people only awarded a humiliating 89.4 points for this Pavie 1978. I really think this wine was not properly treated by drinkers. First, why did Pavie become top respected chateau on the right bank? I can assure you, the most age-worthy wines in the whole of Bordeaux is probably Chateau Pavie! I drank many vintages of Pavie, as old as 1949 from a 375ml bottle that tasted like a 1970s wine (and in fact, the whole table of 10 wine connoisseurs all claimed it was ‘70s wines!). Aged Pavie cannot be under-estimated. I planned to decant this wine for only one hour, as I thought a wine 44 years old was good enough for one hour decanting, but our meal got stretched as we slowly drank all other wines on the table before coming to this bottle, and we started drinking at 2 hours mark and drank over a span of an hour, making it a 3 hour drinking session. Mind you, the wine did not fade, quite the contrary, it was so energetic and no sign of extremely aged profile, the wine was so enjoyable, easily one of the best 1978 Bordeaux wines I’ve ever had! So please don’t believe in others’ ratings until you experience it yourself with proper decanting hours and drink it with an unbiased influence. Extremely satisfying!
