1978 Pontet Canet Pauillac 5th Growth Grand Cru Classe
My experience with Pauillac from 1978 has been pretty memorable thus far, and I was hoping Pontet Canet could do the trick as well. Mildly disappointed, it didn’t perform like the memorable Pichon Baron nor Lafite Rothschild, although it still held up quite well in my opinion. Bouquet was a mix of very slightly oxidized and damp forest floor with some really old leather jacket smell. Surprisingly still tasted relatively youthful, it still has a lot of energy going, in fact, towards the end I was still getting some tannin grips! Very beefy and chunky, with a muscular body build, certainly didn’t feel like a weak vintage at all. This wine could still be kept alive for many years to come if the condition is good.
