1979 Joseph Phelps Syrah
Aromas of black pepper, plum, dark berries and cherries, baking spices, fresh rosemary, cigar box and floral notes. The palate is long and lush with balanced flavors and abundant fruit characteristics.
Another oldest American wine I had while celebrating my good friend's birthday born 79. And again it was tasted double blind with zero clue. The nose was not something I had amongst Bordeaux, Italians or Spanish; not very complex, slightly floral but also vegetal, very slightly maderized. Palette was pleasant, forward, but green notes start to surface after 45 mins which throws me off on the grape type. At this stage I was really clueless, and as usual, big shock when the label and grape type of 100% Syrah.
