1981 Chateau Montrose Saint Estephe
GIVE IT TIME
The 81 Montrose was very closed at first and started with a vegetal aroma that masked off the other elements, and turned off some of the people I was drinking with. But given a little more time in the glass, it opened up with loads of different elements, and ended up being a great wine!
It was showing black currant, hints of leather, and a smoky cigar box. The palate was tannic at first but mellowed down after a while. What surprised me the most was a sort of mineral/iron aftertaste finish.
