1985 Chateau Mouton Baronne Philippe Pauillac
Served double blind. A whiff and the thick leathery nose immediately caught my attention. A sip and I was impressed with the content, very intense, very jam packed, and great length, very enjoyable. My first instinct was a Pauillac, but I could not be firm about my answer as it reminded me a lot of La Lagune 1990 style. I have to place this wine highly in the 1985 ranking, easily out class her sibling Mouton Rothschild and all other first growth, perhaps the only few wines from the 1985 vintage that could beat this Mouton Baronne Philippe would have been Cheval Blanc Saint Emilion 1985, Pavie 1985 and Leoville Barton 1985. I must confess Mouton Baronne Philippe in the 60s, 70s and 80s were really a great label. Since 1989 it has changed it’s name to d’Armailhac, but quality could not match this Mouton Baronne Philippe but I will still keep d’Armailhac for long term aging due to it’s firm inherited pedigree.
