1986 Pichon Lalande Pauillac
ALMOST THERE
I was expecting this wine to perform quite well above the rest as it is known as a powerful vintage. Did not disappoint, lots of things happening inside the glass!
The nose gave off pencil lead, floral notes, blackcurrant, blackberries, spice and vanilla. The palate for me though was not as impressive as the 1983. It was a mix of black fruits, white pepper and was a bit woody. It was not as concentrated and balanced, but still a great wine!

A LADY'S WINE.
Pichon Lalande is the female version of Pauillac, contrasting it to Pichon Baron who is the male chauvinist. It's one of my all time favorite Bordeaux label, having tasted even as far back as 1925, 1945. This 86 vintage was a bit shy of my expectations; very intense vanilla and elegant nose. Palette is infused with hefty vanilla (or wood), but body was light, which leads to slight imbalance. It's also very woody and a bit flat.

Served double blind. I almost nailed this bottle as I know it was a left bank and with heavy Merlot content, mingled with leather, mushroom and pencil lead shaving. I went back and forth between Palmer and Pichon Lalande, but could not agree to it. So I was mildly disappointed to find it was the 2nd wine of Lalande that I never had it this aged before! But I was also happy it was showing so well that this 2nd wine actually aged very well. Thanks Olivier!

Really elegant with good finesse. Only pitfall is that the wine is way too young to drink. Maybe in 20 30 yrs time?
