I personally do not find many 1988 Bordeaux attractive, most are disappointing in fact, it’s an over rated vintage. However, there’s always a gem during a mediocre vintage, and you can count on Lafite and Calon Segur as one of them. Calon Segur 1988 is a charming classic beauty; the wine is very backward and classic style of Bordeaux, very deep and broad flavour, with a lot of aging potential. I’m sure you’ll find this exceptional in terms of price and quality.

I’m not a fan of Bordeaux 88 vintage, contrary to some critics who regarded 88 highly. Quite the contrary, I don’t find too many exciting labels available. But for some reasons, St Estephe did well. I recalled Cos d’Estournel 88 was also very good. Calon Segur punched above it’s weight too. Nose of moderately ripe fruits. Palate was exciting with elegant yet very ripe and forward characters. At later stage, even smoky flavor developed in the glass. Frankly I’ll just focus on St Estephe for 88.

Elegant and powerful, well done Dark, well concentrated with a nose of plum, black fruit, leather, cigar box and vanilla, strong tannins. Not bad for a decent year.
