1989 Malescot St Exupery Margaux
Probably Bok’s best kept secret about this tiny property from the Margaux appellation, during good vintages, this estate was mind bogglingly great. I clearly remembered the 1961 that I tasted multiple times, one of the unsung heroes in Bordeaux, till I hit on this 1989 bottle. I was really impressed. Let’s start with the bouquet; strange Pomelo and light floral notes upon decanting, however, this strange Pomelo quickly blew off, substituted by gently growing stronger smoke, and later replaced with hugely intensive perfume (like those concentrated perfumes you smelled from a perfume bottle). The evolution on the bouquet itself was impressive already. Content was matured, at 31 years old, it’s fully matured for consumption. Big chunky fruits was it’s baseline, coupled with softness and ripeness, it went so well with my wagyu steak that I’m looking forward to another margaux wine tonight – Giscours 1989.
