1995 Les Ormes de Pez
St Estephe Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel
I don’t have a lot of exposure to this Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, not especially aged vintages. As this wine came from St Estephe, a region full of really great classified growths, I would expect even Cru Bourgeois quality could not be too far away. At 27 years old, I gauged that it probably needed 2 hours of decanting time to open up. After decanting, I took a whiff, and I didn’t like what I smelled; a blend of chlorine and dried wood. However, all these changed after 2 hours, turned out to be smoky and ripe fruits. A sip and I was confident that it was at it’s adolescence stage, with everything I expected from a decent Bordeaux wine; great finesse, pleasant, although not much flare to excite me, but it’s truly prim and proper, I could not find fault with the wine at all. Did it possess St Estephe typical character of concentrated tea leaves? I could not detect it. However, quality was really not too distant compared to any classified growth, in fact, even surpassed the quality of most classified growth’s second wines.
