1997 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707
Served double blind. A whiff and a sip and I thought it was probably a Syrah wine from Northern Rhone. My friend corrected me as he used a Grassl 1855 stemware to serve the wine (Bordeaux glass). So it’s probably a Cabernet Sauvignon or a Bordeaux blend. It took me another 15 mins to detect something else surfacing on the bouquet; eucalyptus as well as new oak. I immediately declared it as new world and probably Penfolds Grange (having tasted many Grange in the past, the style was similar), but going back to the stemware choice again, it probably implies Cabernet Sauvignon. I have not had this Bin 707 before, so to get close to the country of origin was as far as I can go.
