1998 Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello
NEW WORLD COMPARISON
In a blind lineup of Moss Wood, Lafite and Monte Bello, all of them were 1998 vintage, all being served blind. Very unfortunately this American wine didn’t quite make it to the cut, was my least favorite.
Nose of greenness, clinical and slight smoke. Palate was extremely dry and tannic, perhaps not ready and needed further aging. The fruits were decent with lively berries all round, although it was hardly impressive. I still much prefer old world wines.
