2005 Louis Carillon Puligny Montrachet Premier Cru
Les Champs Canet
It's difficult to get hold of any Louis Carillon wines nowadays, as the sons Francois and Jacques have inherited and split the father’s plots and their father has gone on to retire from winemaking, thus it’s still a treat. This Les Champs Canet is probably a lesser known plot from Puligny Montrachet, however, being a premier cru, and its location right next to Meursault, it’s unsurprising the style is slightly Meursault driven, with slightly lower acidity and slightly salty style. I was kind of surprised by the deep yellowish color for the wine, even though it’s 17 years in the bottle. The bouquet took me a step further back as initially I do smell over-ripe content, although no sugar-cane notes which will imply pre-oxidation (premox). Content was buttery while the 20% new oak was nicely integrated to the wine. Very dense and powerful flavors. Drink up or keep a couple of years.
