2005 Trio of La Landonne Cote Rotie 1964 and 1966
Over the weekend, I had the pleasure to attend a virtual tasting through Zoom. This flight was completely blind, and obviously if you know Bok, he doesn’t know much outside of Bordeaux and white burgundies…. So I was as clueless as a novice drinker where these three glasses of wines came from? Cote Rotie did cross my mind, but I could not confirm it with confidence. Thus I passed on my blind guessing. Turned out to be an extremely nice flight of three different makers of La Landonne from Cote Rotie: Rene Rostaing, Delas and E. Guigal, all three from the same vintage of 2005. Rene Rostaing was the most ready to drink, very ripe and easiest amongst the three. Delas was of slightly lighter style although the fruit was chewy, needs a lot more aging. Guigal’s La Landonne was a powerful and inky wine, so dense it probably needed a hammer to smash through the density, slightly bitter as well. Guigal has the most classic style amongst the three, with superb structure, and definitely has a huge aging potential. I wouldn’t want to drink these wines for the next 20 years, better to age it to derive maximum drinking pleasure!
