2007 Villa Matilde Tenute di Altavilla Taurasi
VOLCANIC SMOKE
This Taurasi wine, from the region of Campania, Italy, is made with 100% Aglianico grapes, which is not a common grape that I come across very often.
The first whiff gave me some very nice sweet smelling smoke that I've never smelled in other wines. I found out that the vines are planted on limestone and volcanic soil, which provides this smoky factor. It was surprisingly smooth and balanced on the palate. Unfortunately, it lacked on the fruits department which made me lower my rating.
