2018 Guffens Heynen Saint Veran
I pulled out this bottle without much thought, just wanted a bottle of white to pair it with my charcoal grilled fish for tonight, so anything casual will keep me happy. To my big surprise, I enjoyed the wine! Bouquet was not revealing much, probably a blend of fresh pear, very faint lemon juice and light peach. A sip and I was sold on it’s great acidity! It’s very difficult to find a Saint-Veran wine with this kind of acidity, certainly surprised me a lot. Meanwhile, the fruits is more of a background play, definitely not taking the main stage, with fleshy lightweight flavors with a blend of lemon and fresh pear. I understand Guffens-Heynen owns the plot and he tenders to this plot personally. No wonder Robert Parker calls him a genius when it comes to winemaking!
