2020 Le Caillou Le Clos du Caillou Cotes du Rhone
I have drank many Le Clos du Caillou wines in the past, this Le Caillou is obviously their entry level. A whiff and I can tell from the bouquet that it’s a bit like sugary water, there’s no complexity. A sip and it confirms my observation, the wine felt like it has gone through chaptalization (a process of adding sugar to unfermented grape). However, I was wrong with my observation, as the weather is hot enough thus Rhone Valley wines do not need chaptalization, thus producing highly alcoholic wines. The wine is aged in concrete tanks for 2 months. The good news is, it’s very drinkable and pleasant, perhaps soft and had a lot of dried fruits and Provençal herbs, goes well with a simple meal.
