2021 Domaine Philippe Colin Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Demoiselles
Philippe Colin is known to produce excellent Chassagne Montrachet wines, first time I’m drinking his wine from the aristocratic plot of Puligny Montrachet, thus I make it a point to write my tasting notes. Meanwhile, I had a leftover glass of Henri Boillot Meursault 1er Cru Clos Richemont 2019 (not shown in photo) as comparison and benchmark, thus the result is more meaningful. Bouquet of elegant oak, reminiscent to winemaker’s Chassagne Montrachet style, along with ripe fruits and summer floral. Body is lively, with a lengthy finishing, the bright spot is the lively acidity, despite the fruits are slightly thinner or less concentrated compared to some other winemakers’ Les Demoiselles, it’s still extremely enjoyable, the winemaking skill is certainly at a pinnacle level being able to produce both excellent Chassgne Montrachet and Puligny Montrachet wines, which implies he absolutely understand how to utilize the terroir to compliment his winemaking skills. Clos Richemont style is more of a steady, honest wine, with a typical Meursault style of the lack of lively acidity. I much prefer the Les Demoiselles I have tasted with the very engaging dialogue.
