2022 Prinz von Hessen Riesling Extra Trocken
This sparkling juice came from the region of Rheingau of Germany. Riesling is an indigenous grape variety originated from the Rhine region. Thus, it’s interesting to taste a sparkling using different grape varietal compared to the typical Chardonnay or Pinot Noir. Aroma took me a step back as I originally smelled charred plastics, but upon careful re-evaluation, it smelled more like a pungent cheese (think Epoisse from burgundy). Content is very close to Champagne produced quality, with a blend of green and ripe apples, except Riesling is sweeter than Champagne counterparty. Foam and bubbles are abundant, probably a blessing from the young vintage. I think it’s worth a try so that you can formulate a different perspective from the common beaten path of Champagne style.
