The 1959 Calon-Ségur is a vintage that, to my surprise, I have never encountered before. This particular example was bottled by the merchant: "Morgan Furze". Showing commensurate signs of ageing, it has a wonderful nose with vestiges of black fruit, shoe leather (perhaps more like the scent if you walked into tannery – singed leather perchance?), desiccated orange rind and mint. With aeration, there is a touch of old bricks lending another layer of satisfying complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with bitter cherry on the entry, allspice and cola, becoming more tarry towards the finish. This shows commendable breeding, still full of freshness and if you can abide a bit of Saint-Estèphe rusticity, this will suit you down to the ground. (7/2018)
Wine Spectator
Has a fascinating nose, with multidimensional earthy aromas, but it's slightly drying on the palate. Garnet-ruby in color, with more of an amber edge, offering intensely spicy, leafy, gamy and somewhat earthy aromas. Full-bodied, with a quite tannic mouthfeel and a short finish. (10/1990)
