Wine With Bok - 9.25/10 stars
Chateau Meyney is located on an exceptional plot in St Estephe neighbouring great chateaus like Montrose, Phelan-Segur and Calon Segur. The prime location almost casted the quality of Meyney firmly in a Grand Cru territory. The composition of the wine was roughly 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 18% Petit Verdot. A whiff and I was surprised by the floral fragrance, which is uncommon for a St Estephe wine (to me, they normally possessed heavy tea leaves character). Content wise, another surprise was that the wine was extremely approachable at this age, and I thought the Merlot content was easily 40% as it was really smooth and pleasant sip. Furthermore, this wine came from a well-recognized strong vintage of 2018 for Bordeaux, to be drinkable at this age was a big plus for a Bordeaux wine. The price is extremely affordable, thus it’s a no-brainer wine to pick up for drinking. (8/2023)
James Suckling - 96 points
A very dense yet tight and focused red with blackcurrants, blackberries and hints of spices and walnuts. Full-bodied, very compact and long. Intense finish. (4/2019)
Decanter - 94 points
It's clear that this is hugely concentrated, as is the Montrose right next door, but there's also beautiful juice and freshness underneath the black fruits and the powerful grip. Tannins, acidity and fruit: it's all there. This is great quality and should be long-lived, with a rich palate, evenly balanced and austere in all the right places. Another good vintage at this increasingly impressive property. (4/2019)
Vinous - 94 points
The 2018 Meyney is powerful, dense and super-expressive. Gravel, game, scorched earth, smoke, licorice, incense and spice infuse this potent, virile Saint-Estèphe. The fruit profile and oak integration point to a transition towards a less extracted style. Even so, there is plenty of the richness readers have come to expect from Meyney. Tasted two times.
