2020 Philippe Colin Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumees Clos St Abdon - 750ml
Wine & Spirits - 94 Points
Les Chaumées is the highest premier cru on the north end of Chassagne, including Colin's parcel where most of his vines are 50 years old, planted on shallow soils over limestone. His 2020 generated some controversy among our tasters, one finding the pear-like fruit too dominant, another finding the acidity out of balance, others, including this writer, attracted by the wine's gracious power. The acidity takes notes of honey and lemon butter and edges them with a radish-like buzz. The freshness of the bright lemon and pear flavors bodes well for long develop in bottle.
Allen Meadows Burghound - 92 Points
Moderate reduction is enough to overshadow the underlying fruit though there is both good freshness and vibrancy to the caressing but attractively punchy and textured flavors that possess solid concentration, all wrapped in a refreshingly dry finale. This could use better depth, but the potential appears to be present such that more can develop with a few years of bottle aging.
