The Kaesler vineyards were owned and farmed by the Kaesler family from 1893 until 1986. In 1999, winemaker Reid Bosward and his partners acquired the estate, becoming only the third custodians of this historic property. At the time, more than 70% of the vineyards were planted to red varieties, all over 40 years old. With access to such prized old-vine fruit, Reid set out to craft bold, estate-grown wines that truly expressed the Barossa Valley.
The remarkable intensity of the old-vine Shiraz inspired him to create a flagship wine, the “Old Bastard” Shiraz—a rich, powerful style now classified as Outstanding by Langton’s. Its success paved the way for Kaesler’s reputation, followed by a celebrated portfolio including the generous Stonehorse range, the premium old-vine Shiraz “The Bogan,” and Alte Reben.
Today, Kaesler owns just over 37 hectares (92 acres) of vineyards in the Barossa, with significant plantings dating back to 1893, 1899, 1930, and the 1960s. All fruit is hand-picked and hand-pruned, with minimal irrigation. Yields are carefully managed through crop thinning, and individual vineyard blocks are vinified separately before blending. Vineyard Manager Nigel Van Der Zande has also introduced revegetation projects to enrich soils, restore biodiversity, and give back to the land.
The Bogan is sourced from old-vine Shiraz planted in Marananga and Nuriootpa, with some parcels dating back 119 years.
