Its name is thought to reflect the layout of the clos “which lies on the rock,” referring to the stony topography. Another hypothesis suggests that a notable boulder once stood here, possibly connected to an ancient Celtic or druidic cult. The appellation has been present at Domaine Amiot for at least four generations, forming a historic part of the estate’s identity. The vines grow with east to south-east exposure at 270–300 meters elevation on brown limestone soils rich in rock and gravel. Clos de la Roche is located in Morey-Saint-Denis, just south of Les Combottes and beside Clos-Saint-Denis, in a highly prestigious sector of the Côte de Nuits. At the domaine, holdings are divided over three parcels—Monts Luisants at the top of the slope, Fremières mid-slope, and Les Chabiots at the bottom—bringing nuance and completeness to the blend. Viticulture and vinification are adapted to each vintage to produce the finest wines while preserving terroir typicity.
The wine is aged in oak barrels with 50% new oak, allowing depth and complexity to develop over time. The nose offers rose and violet with cranberry and cherry, complemented by hints of pepper and truffle. The palate is ample, balanced, and highly complex, showing exceptional length. This powerful, aromatically rich Burgundy pairs ideally with red meats, sauced game dishes, and mature cheeses.
