2000 Chateau Clarke - 750ml
Wine With Bok - 9.25/10 Stars
Since 1973, Baron Edmond de Rothschild, owner of Lafite Rothschild bought over this property. Following the change of ownership, the expertise from Lafite Rothschild re-planned the whole vineyard and vowed to restore the glory of this chateau. Edmond has a particular love for Chateau Clarke, he chose to be buried in Chateau Clarke upon his death. Vintage 2000 is a well known vintage for Bordeaux, thus I expected a decent outcome of this bottle. Upon a whiff, I wasn’t disappointed, leather and graphite were very prominent. Content was a very typical Bordeaux taste, almost by the textbook; loads of black currant mingled with black cherry, a bit earthy and dry, but I believe it can easily compete with any classified growths, and still tasted better than them. Lastly, this wine is still at it’s adolescence stage, you can definitely keep and age this bottle for the next 3 decades effortlessly. (01/24)
This wine consists of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged from 14 to 18 months in oak, 60% to 100% of the barrels renewed each year. The 2000 vintage was legendary in Bordeaux, and this wine shows all the hallmarks of that vintage. There is a wonderful aromatic complexity leading to a soft palate that picks up weight and intensity on the long, luxurious finish. The balance and structure of the wine will allow it to age for another eigtht to 10 years, but it drinks lovely today with a bit of aeration.
