2010 Monte Real Rioja Gran Reserva (Free - Worth $85)

Wine By Bok - 9.25/10 Stars

Bodegas Riojanas is a grand old names of Rioja, they have been producing wines since 1890. They produce really classic wines, I would put them firmly in the Rioja Old School territory. The wine is mainly made by Tempranillo, although they did not specify, I suspect they have some Garnacha blended as well. If there’s a region that can age wines better than any other regions, it’ll have to be Rioja wines, I have tasted Spanish wines in the ‘40s and ‘50s, they are just as good as ‘60s or ‘70s Bordeaux or Italian wines. I’m very sure Monte Real wines can age very well if you choose to keep it for 30 to 50 years. The bouquet presented a very classic style of strong oak with some chocolate and coconut. Not surprisingly, they are aged in American new oak barrels. To be qualified as a Gran Reserva, the wine has to be aged for 2+ years in the barrel and another 3 years in bottles, thus unsurprisingly, the content is also very oak driven, vanilla is very prominent, along with some leather. Very backward style, the style itself is telling me the wine is very age-worthy, so you should keep it as many years as possible.

Wine By Bok - 9/10 stars

Bodegas Riojanas is a grand old names of Rioja, they have been producing wines since 1890. They produce really classic wines, I would put them firmly in the Rioja Old School territory. However, this Gran Albina Reserva is slightly deviated from their classic behavior, as I can feel that this label has more modern elements within it. With a blend of indigenous varities of 34% Tempranillo, 33% Mazuelo and 33% Garciano, the vineyard fully comply with the Reserva standards of ageing in new American, French and Eastern European oak barrels for 24 months followed by ageing in the wine bottle for another 12 months. One can easily get a whiff of the oak barrel through it’s bouquet which is very smoky and vanilla driven, and the dense dark cherry fruits. Mouthfeel is good, very lively and engaging, I particularly enjoy the well-integrated black fruits with the vanilla taste, very vibrant. This wine probably can age well down the road with a promise of a long life ahead.

2018 Monte Real Rioja Reserva De Familia DOCa Rioja

Monte Real Reserva is a D.O. Rioja red wine by Bodegas Riojanas. A single varietal (100%) Tempranillo. Its grapes are from Cenicero. They are destemmed and pressed with new fermentation control technology and long maceration periods. The 24 to 30-month ageing period in American oak barrels is done by following the right racking procedures. A minimum bottling period of 12 months is necessary before the wine is put on the market.

    James Suckling - 93 Points

A pure and sober as well as a mysterious wine. Unique notes of liquorice are the distinctive hallmark of Monte Real Reserva de Familia, which later evolved into a purer version of Tempranillo to play tribute to the inspiration of the founders of Bodegas Riojanas. Cherry-red colour with subtle hints of garnet at the edge. The nose opens with core notes of ripe fruit, strawberries and liquorice that blend with the background notes from the wood. Fresh on the palate, with an energy that is both cerebral and emotional, not overwhelming but subtle. It is a heartfelt statement of the unique beauty of the vineyards of El Monte and the characteristics of Tempranillo. Pleasant and tasty, with mouth-filling ripe and very smooth tannins. Its long, lingering finish will transport you to any special moment, proving that the power of the emotions exists.

2019 Marques de Penamonte Coleccion Privada DO Toro

    Wine by Bok - 9.25/10

This wine comes from Bodegas Riojanas, a big wine producer in Spain with long history of producing wines since 1890. Made of 100% Tinta de Toro from old vineyards, the wine is rather expressive and of very good quality. The bouquet and mouth feel of the first sip expresses a large amount of American oak of which they age it for twenty months followed by resting in French oak barrels thereafter. The wine was rated 91 by James Suckling, although my rating was slightly higher at 9.25 stars as I think the quality is worth paying attention to this label. Wine has a toasted smoky bouquet along with dark fruits with great intensity. I enjoy the mouthfeel, as it has substance with body, chunky and fleshy fruits, not the shaky and feather light content of those cheap wines. A worthwhile wine for exploration. (10/23)
