1966 Chateau Leoville Poyferre Saint Julien
My bottle was at mid shoulder, a bit worrisome, but knowing my provenance, and at the age of 55 years old, I still uncorked it for tonight’s dinner. I took a whiff after uncorking, smelled some soy sauce and mustiness, but I didn’t pour for a sip as dinner was still 2 hours away, I’d take my chances. My wife served the wine in my favorite Grassl 1855 stemware, a whiff and I was totally head over heels, as my previous concerns of the soy sauce taste was nowhere to be found, and the bouquet complexity was so great it totally caught my attention, almost a perfect Bordeaux bouquet (I recently reported the Cheval Blanc Saint Emilion 1990 had the best bouquet.) The content was reminiscent to the top rated 1990 vintage, and almost a mirror image, with very deep, inky and long finishing. A bit dried out towards the end of the dinner, perhaps it has reached it’s peak drinking window, won’t improve with further aging.
