1971 Chateau Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve
AWESOME HOLDING POWER
Not often I get to be treated with a legendary wine. This Rayas was certainly the oldest Chateauneauf du Pape I could recall. Normally big and bold when young, but failed to age gracefully, till this bottle changed my perception.
Heavy orange peel + meat + mushroom on the nose. Very cloudy color. Loads of sweet dry strawberries and dry cherries on the palate, extremely long finishing, generous, seductive. Even after an hour it did turn a bit medicinal but didn't fall off the cliff!
