1971 Varoilles Clos Des Varoilles Monopole Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru
STILL SINGING Pinot Noir, an extremely fragile grape, I really don't have much luck with old bottles. This one was pristine with perfect provenance. Dry tobacco leaves, toasty and musty on the nose. Palette was surprisingly still lively despite being just a premier cru. Extremely sweet, very forward, mellow, slightly green and in fact I loved the charming character of the wine. Unfortunately it faded relatively fast and quickly ended up with dry finishing.
