1977 Lafite Rothschild Pauillac
My wife’s birth year, what else to celebrate apart from having one of the best labels from Bordeaux? A watershed and a vintage severe damage caused by frost, one shall not expect much from Bordeaux wines, but not all was bad, as I have drank Les Forts de Latour, Haut Brion and Mouton Rothschild 1977 before, and they’re all drinking very well. While having lunch at La Dame du Pic, the sommelier decanted it into a Zalto decanter and we consumed it over a span of three hours. Initially the wine was very shut, tasted so tight and slightly harsh, and only after 1.5 hours I realized it finally started to improve. Fruits were light, with a touch of elegance, after all, Lafite is truly the Queen of Bordeaux, it’ll never shout nor yell, always whispering right next to you. Lovely Bordeaux despite a bad vintage, Lafite is still a Lafite with it’s super holding power. The ending was slightly dry, perhaps it should not age any further, drink up now!
