1978 Lynch Bages Pauillac
5th Grand Cru Classe
I have some very impressive Pauillac wines from 1978; an almost perfect Lafite Rothschild followed by a memorable Pichon Baron. I also had some mediocre Pauillac wines; Mouton Rothschild came into mind, as well as Pichon Lalande. When a 1978 Pauillac performed, it was mind-blowing. Unfortunately, this Lynch Bages didn’t live up to the formal, rather, it was sandwiched between the formal and latter. It possessed huge number of tertiary characteristics, as well as musty aged notes, on the bouquet. Content wise, it was a bold fruity expression, with flavour being very expansive. Somehow lacked the fruit charm of better vintages of Lynch Bages, it’s still an impressive vintage with just a very slight dryness towards the finishing.
