1985 Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage La Chapelle
A friend read my review that I wasn’t impressed with this vintage, tested me totally blind tonight. Thank goodness I was always honest with my response, and I insisted this wine wasn’t great. Shocked to find that he tested me with La Chapelle 85! I have made 3,000+ reports, all of them from the bottom of my heart, I can assure you it has to be tested and proven.

I must’ve tasted 3 4 bottles of this La Chapelle 85 over the past few years, and I always rated it quite lowly, probably 4 stars only. My friend brought this from ex Chateau, and I must admit it’s a big step up. Nose of fine and refined oaks, with ripe fruits. Content was very fresh, mellow and slightly medicinal. I must admit the provenance played a big part.

I had this 85 twice or thrice, didn't impress me once despite many people were telling me how great this vintage was. I have to disagree with the majority.
Funky bouquet of medicinal, beefy and even marshmallow surfaced! I would expect a good vintage to be lively, quite the opposite on the palate, it was extremely woody, very dry despite rich fruits, mainly dark fruits, predominantly showing in the content. Not exactly persuaded that this was a great vintage for La Chapelle.

FELL OFF THE CLIFF I had so much expectations on this bottle thinking it's probably going to be wine of the night. Unfortunately the subject line differed. Nose of Syrah, medicinal and tea leaves. Tasted really forward and approachable initially, pretty enjoyable. But in the glass for just 15 minutes, the charm disappeared, replaced with lean and dry body. I have to aptly call this best disappointment I had falling off the cliff as fast as it can!
