1989 Bouchard Pere & Fils Chambertin Grand Cru
DOUBTING CHAMBERTIN
I used to be impressed with Chambertin, the top level Grand Cru plot. However, recent tasting of a few Chambertins (including Rousseau) have me totally a changed perception of this plot. It doesn't have the elegance or finesse of burgundy, instead it was a chunky 300 lbs gorilla, full of structure and big notes. Somehow muffled cooked fruits on the nose. Body although extremely complex and structural, was too dense and too cooked a strawberry. I have nothing against Bouchard.

I was drinking this one next to a legendary Armand Rousseau Chambertin 97, a good comparison (will post review later). The nose was moderately floral, a bit buttery, rich creamy style. This is really an elegant wine on the palette; red fruits, strawberry, sweet berries, smooth, creamy and rich. The most important touch was that this wine has got great charm. Towards the end of dinner, this wine closed up the gap with Rousseau Chambertin with prune ending, that was a great fight!
