1998 Cheval Blanc Saint Emilion
Served blind, and I can only describe the wine from my glass. Bouquet of gentle smoke, monstrous fruits immediately encapsulated the whole glass, from the nose, I already zoomed in as a first growth quality. Body was tight (it wasn’t decanted prior to tasting) but not tannic. I was sure it was in the ‘90s at this point. I waited for another hour to let it open up, and realized the body on the palette was really broad and the length was superb. I was fixated as a Pauillac wine, so right bank did not even come to my mind. Was truly surprised to find that it’s Cheval Blanc Saint Emilion 1998, one of the best right bank vintages in the ‘90s, and a bottle that I’ve never drank before (as I always think it’s way too young). At the age of 21 years old, I still think it’s way too young. I hope to drink it again in 15 years’ time, it should have developed the tertiary flavour to get me addicted. I’m sure by 2035 I will change my scores to 10/10 as I can see the huge potential in this wine!

The deep ruby/purple color reveals an extraordinary projected, surreal bouquet of menthol, red, blue, and black fruits, and hints of mocha, licorice, and sweet oak. This opulent, tremendously concentrated Cheval Blanc Saint Emilion possesses undeniable finesse, elegance, and freshness as well as a vibrant, nuanced, delineated personality. Even though it's not ready, this wine exhibits everything u can ask for from Cheval. I think it'll turn into a 64 in years to come.
