2001 E. Guigal Cote Rotie Chateau dAmpuis
When you think of Guigal Cote Rotie wines, you immediately go for the very famous La Las: La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque as they are heralded as some of the greatest wines in Northern Rhone. But Guigal also makes another wine with Chateau d’Ampuis which they bought only in 1995. This wine is still considered the new kid on the block and the price is reflected on that as it is much cheaper than the La Las.
It had a very intense nose of sweet ripe dark cherry, smoky meat, spice and oak. Palate was filled with red fruits, spice, and a great balance of acidity and velvety tannins to finish. A great value Cote Rotie wine from Guigal now, but as it gets better I am sure the market price will also go up!
