2001 Le Clos du Caillou Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz
Before drinking this wine, I read that Robert Parker rated this wine 99! So I went in expecting more from this wine and see if it will actually blow me away or once again confirm that his ratings should not be trusted and be a basis for buying wine.
Nose was heavy of ripe black currants, spice, pepper with a bit of soy sauce and medicinal herbal smell. Palate was powerful with dried fruits, spice, and a mineral finish. This mellowed and fruits still held as time went on. The verdict: A decent wine but definitely not deserving of 99 points!
