2009 Dues Ex Machina Clos St Jean Chateaueuf Du Pape
Robert Parker gave a 99 points to this wine, but I have to stand by my scores of 9.5, as I don’t think it should deserve such a high score. I started with Grassl Cru stemware versus Grassl 1855 stemware, the Cru bouquet was a bit off, with some artificial rubbery or chemical notes, whereas 1855 stemware gave me a definitive dark fruits along with powerful oak profile, and more importantly the overwhelming alcohol, so I decided to follow my instinct and went for 1855 stemware thereafter. Content was obviously solid with compact fruits, very concentrated, obvious dark fruits of blackberry and graphites and tar. I wouldn’t rate it close to perfect as it lacked some kind of purity and charm, the fruits were big, but lacked certain perfect wine characters for me to bow towards a perfect wine. Loads of tannins follow suit when I was nearing the finishing of the whole bottle, that implied this wine should really be aged for at least two decades for maximize the potential.
