2010 Chateau Clarke, Listrac-Medoc, Cru Bourgeois, Bordeaux, 2010
Since 1973, Baron Edmond de Rothschild, owner of Lafite Rothschild bought over this property. Following the change of ownership, the expertise from Lafite Rothschild re-planned the whole vineyard and vowed to restore the glory of this chateau. Edmond has a particular love for Chateau Clarke, he chose to be buried in Chateau Clarke upon his death. 2010 was a great vintage of Bordeaux, character wise, it was very similar to 1959 which was a very classic and backward vintage, and took a long time to age to reach a good drinking window. I can use a bit of linear extrapolation and imagination of Chateau Clarke 2010 to fast forward to 2074, I’ll be sure it will be one of the great Bordeaux labels by then. Presently, aroma was very shut and slight funky oak upon the first pour, thus I decanted it for 2 hours just to find the bouquet completely morphed into ripe and rich fruits, very plummy. Content wise, as expected, very classic and backward with good balance, finesse and elegance. I think it should rank on par with most classified Bordeaux wines. I’d love to do a benchmark one day!
