2011 Vina Real CVNE
Rioja Gran Reserva
To be called a Gran Reserva, it has to be aged 2 years in barrels and 3 years in bottles, and most winemakers select the best grapes for this level, thus this is the great Rioja classification and Gran Reserva is at the top of the classification. Based upon these facts, I decanted it for 2+ hours. After decanting, the bouquet was decent with a balanced oaky style alongside light fruits, it all changed after 2+ hours of decanting to turn into very concentrated grape fruits, almost like an Amarone which were made from grapes that have been dried to concentrate their juice. Content is slightly disappointing, as it doesn’t have anything interesting; A bit too dull and unexciting with very Amarone driven style. However, don’t write off any C.V.N.E. too early, as they age really well and come into live after several decades of aging. My experience with Spanish wine is that it’s the most age-worthy red wines on earth.
